The Coast

“I’ve packed my bags plenty of times.  I’ve played Houston in the Summer, and Buffalo in the winter. My friend tells me, “Where ever you go…there you are.”   Cleveland seems OK.  There are places I would rather be.   Two words paint a picture when I say them… “The Coast”.

Look at the population.  Most of the world lives around the coast line.  And if they don’t, they want to.  What do they do for a vacation?  The coast.  It’s not because of Disneyland or the studios or the movies stars, it’s the beach.  It‘s the edge of a continent.  Because no mater how you bad mouth it, or what the weather is, or if there is hot dogs or no hot dogs, cotton candy, no cotton candy, Big waves- no surf. Deserted or Crowed.  Doesn’t matter what your trip is.  The bottom line.  Everybody loves the beach.   Stand at the edge of a continent and look out at the ocean, it’s one of the few moments in life when you really know where you are.

(Nick bends down and pretends to pick up two handfuls of sand)

And you grab yourself a double handful and try and hang on.

How come the harder you try to hold on to the sand, the more pressure you put on it, the faster it runs out between your fingers.  Finally you look at your hand and there is nothing left but a few grains.  So what do you do?  You reach down and grab some more.  I just don’t think I have the energy to go down there anymore.”

  1. This is a wonderful metaphor for the fragility of life.
Now you know why I love Mexico…walking on the beach for about 2 miles, looking for rare sea glass, strengthening my legs, and gazing out at a place I know so little of.
    Nice work, my friend!
